How Does a Ball Valve Work?

Inside a housing, there is a ball with a bore. This ball is connected to an operating lever via a rotatable axis, allowing the ball to be rotated as needed. This closes or opens the passage for the liquid medium through a 90° rotation of the ball. It's important to note that the valve should not be closed too quickly, as this can lead to pressure surges in the connected pipelines depending on the liquid or flow medium. This can accelerate the premature wear of the ball. Additionally, it is crucial that the valve is operated regularly to function properly and without much effort. Infrequent operation can lead to deposits or adhesion effects, making it difficult to turn the ball, potentially breaking the lever in the worst case.

If the bore of the ball has the same internal diameter as the connected pipes, it is called a full bore. With a reduced bore, the hole is smaller than the diameter of the pipe.
